Timothy Klein is the Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology at the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). He earned his Master of Public Administration degree from the George Washington University in 1986 and has worked in the federal government ever since, including more than 10 years in his current position in the USDOT's Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology.
Mr. Klein’s work as a Senior Policy Advisor puts him at the nexus of transportation research and policy – enabling collaboration with state and local, tribal, federal and international partners to advance research, technology goals, and policy discussions. He is especially excited by advances in safety as USDOT deploys improvements in GPS navigation, intelligent vehicles and infrastructures, wireless communications and big data. This work increases safety and reduces deaths and injuries by direct means such as collision avoidance warnings and better roadway designs and by indirect means including improved traffic flow, next generation emergency response capabilities and social influence such as countering distracted driving and GPS jamming. Because technology deployment often requires policy changes, including regulatory and legal changes, Mr. Klein knows that informing policymakers is a crucial part of bringing safety to people.
Mr. Klein has received numerous honors, including the Secretary’s Transportation Safety Award, the Arthur S. Flemming Award, and the William A. Jump Award. He was featured as the Washington Post’s “Fed Face” in June 2011. He is a member of the American National Standards Institute, the Standards Engineering Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Mr. Klein is a Senior Fellow of the Partnership for Public Service, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at George Washington University, where he received his undergraduate and graduate training. Prior to joining USDOT, he managed programs and projects for 15 years at the National Air and Space Administration’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
