Michael D. Golden is a communications veteran with more than 35 years of experience in both the private and public sectors. Golden is the Director of External Affairs for the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (MSRPS), a position he has held since February 2010.
At MSRPS, Golden directs and manages the agency’s communications functions; prepares the System’s legislative proposals for presentation to the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Pensions; represents the System before the Maryland General Assembly, provides accurate and detailed information in support of or opposition to pension legislation; assists agency staff in the development and implementation of regulations as well as the revision of existing regulations; and advises the Executive Director with analysis and development of legislative proposals and other major policies affecting the agency and its programs.
Prior to MSRPS, Golden was Managing Director of Communications at Maryland Public Television (MPT). He joined MPT in January 2007 after serving eight years as Press Secretary for the Comptroller of Maryland, William Donald Schaefer. Prior to that, Golden served as Press Secretary for Schaefer’s campaign for Comptroller in 1998.
Before joining Comptroller Schaefer’s campaign effort, Golden served as the Director of Communications for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Golden held that position for nearly a decade, following a six-month stint as Assistant Press Secretary to then-Governor Schaefer.
Golden joined the Governor’s press staff following a successful 10-year career as an award winning radio broadcast journalist in Baltimore at three local stations. During his broadcast career, he covered local, state and national events for the stations where he was employed and regularly served as a stringer for ABC, NBC, CBS and Mutual Broadcasting when affiliated with those networks.
Golden attended the University of Maryland at College Park, receiving a BA in Communications and a Master in Public Policy from the University of Maryland School of Public Policy.
